The Velocity Insights is compiled using data available from Supplyframe’s Design to Source Intelligence (DSI) Network. The DSI Network consists of more than 70+ web properties, attracting 11M+ engineers and procurement professionals from around the world on a monthly basis. Engineers and procurement professionals visit and interact with the DSI Network specifically for their work (research, consider, design, and buy), enabling Supplyframe to understand design trends, sourcing trends, and extrapolate indicators of overall market conditions and trends.
The Velocity Insights consists of two reports:
Design Insights:
- The monthly design activity report provides insights into the most researched and designed-in components by engineers. This data is provided at both the MPN and manufacturer level.
Based on part level activity by engineers on the DSI Network. Activities included are related to part evaluation and part placement in designs via EDAs (data sheet requests, model downloads, model requests, and model placement). Activities are normalized, weighted, and scored on a scale of 0 – 100. Index scores are relative to the dimensions of data being included in the analyses (ie. Country, manufacturer, categories). The value of 100 represents peak activity for the part. A value of 0 means that there was not enough data for the part.
- The monthly design activity report provides insights into the most researched and designed-in components by engineers. This data is provided at both the MPN and manufacturer level.
Sourcing Insights:
- The monthly sourcing activity report provides insights into components that are most considered for purchase by buyers. This data is provided at both the MPN and manufacturer level.
- Based on part level activity by buyers on the DSI Network. Activities included are related to “buy now” clicks on the DSI Network. The index is scored on a scale of 0 – 100. Index scores are relative to the dimensions of data being included in the analyses (ie. Country, manufacturer, categories). Value of 100 represents peak demand for the part. A value of 0 means that there was not enough data for the part.

How To Use Velocity Insights
- A proxy for “market” condition by evaluating trends in engineering design activities and procurement sourcing activities
- Understand what product categories are in demand by engineers and buyers
- Anticipate future demand based on where design activities are concentrated (categories and regions)
Measure Definition: Monthly Activity Index (applies to Product, MPN, and Manufacturer views)
Ranked by volume of activity for a given data dimension (product, MPN, manufacturer).
Index value of 100 represents the most popular (maximum volume of activity). 50 represents half as popular. 0 represents not enough activities to index. The monthly activity index provides users with an understanding of how much activity a data dimension received in a month compared to other products, MPN, or manufacturers.
Measure Definition: Velocity Index (applies to Product, MPN, and Manufacturer views)
The velocity index is used to understand the rate of change for a single data dimension (product, MPN, manufacturer), or compare the rate of change between two or more data dimensions (product, MPN, manufacturer) over a period of time. A slope for the trend line indicates the velocity (or rate) of change. The steeper the line, the more accelerated the rate of change. The velocity index is intended to be used in conjunction with the monthly activity index to understand both the rate of change and the overall popularity of a data dimension (product, MPN, manufacturer).
